UKR - Medical support Dnipro hospitals

Monday, January 1, 2024

Rotary Clubs, Action Groups and other teams have been helping Rotary Ukraine and the population of the invaded country since the second day of the 2022 war.

Rotary Gent-Zuid (District 2130, Belgium) was no different.

Assistance to the hospitals in Dnipro is part of that and the direct consequence of the 2 week tour around Ukraine in 2023 by Luc ROMBOUT.

Collaboration

A permanent collaboration has been established between Rotary Gent-Zuid, Rotary Dnipro and one of the key hospitals in the city.

From that, we are working on a number of projects that are organised and guaranteed on the basis of the humanitarian neutral mission of Rotary, and the integrity of its members.

By the way ... Rotary

If you got to this page and are not a Rotarian, it is perhaps interesting to learn that with 1.4 million members, Rotary is the biggest Humanitarian NGO in the world.

Since the start of the Russian attack in 2022, Rotary (and this is a conservative estimate) delivered € 120.000.000 of aid goods to Ukraine, in just twelfe months.
That is NOT counting the thousands of hours of volunteer work.

One of the operating theatres in a Dnipro hospital (L. Rombout and surgeon O. Sokolov)

Context

  • Dnipro is a city in central Ukraine, north of Zaporizhzhia and south of Cherkasy.
  • Hospitals in the city receive wounded soldiers and civilians from the central sector. Many of them have been treated in Stabilisation Points and receive more advanced and specialised urgent care in Dnipro.
  • Examples of this are: vacsular, neurological and burn-wound treatmens.
  • The images on this page are from one of those hospitals - No. 16 - where a heavy load of wounded has been and is treated.

Local situation

The hospital in these photographs:

  • has 4 operating theatres, in use 6 days out of 7, 23 hours out of 24.
  • surgeons perform life saving and curative surgery in the domain of amputations, post-amputation treatment, vascular reconstruction, pneumo-surgery, neuro-surgery etcetera.
  • due to the heavy load on the equipment, the hospital has fallen in disrepair, with high needs in the field of
    • surgery department (Operating Theatre equipment)
    • sterilisation
    • Intensive Care Unit (currently absent)
    • surgical laundry department
    • medical imagery

Sometimes, the situation is just dangerous for the doctors and medical staff.
Because of equipment failure (do to intense use, lack of spare parts, lack of budget for repairs),
the CT-scanner used to identify Shrapnel in the body of patients, does not communicate anymore with visualisation tools.

The surgical team uses a CT-Arch as an "Open X-Ray camera" exposing themselves for the duration of surgery to direct radiation.
No replacement for the machine yet, no protective equipment for the doctors.

Projects

In collaboration with the hospital staff and Rotary Dnipro, a number of projects has been identified and we are working on getting the materials, knowledge and funding:

  1. Equipment of the surgical department: new Operating Theatre equipment, sterilisation, construction of post-Op / ICU and renewal of laundry equipment.

  2. Development of a training for vascular bypass surgery for frontline doctors / medics: in a collaboration with Belgian and Ukrainian vascular surgeons, the objective is to develop training materials (e-learning, ...) for combat doctors to be able to perform vascular bypass surgery in the Stabilisation Points post-blast amputation. This procedure will limit vastly the number of wounded that require Dialysis post Tourniquet application.

  3. Support to other hospitals in Dnipro: distribution of donated hospital / medical equipment and consumables to other Dnipro hospitals (for war wounds and other treatments).d

How to support

  • Donation of medical equipment, primarily in the field of: general surgery, anesthaesia, orthopedics, neurology, vascular surgery, patient monitoring.

  • Donation of specific medical equipment for surgical imaging, to allow surgeons to observe and guide the procedure (CT-scan, ultrasound, ...).

  • Donation of consumables (surgical tools, external fixators, ...), bandages, etc.

  • Financial support for the transport of these goods to Dnipro.

  • Financial support for equipment that we cannot get through donations.

For financial support: please contact the project coordinator (info below) or info@rcgentzuid.be

You may donate directly to the account of our Club or we can try to open up the Rotary account at the Koning Boudewijn Stichting (King Boudewijn Foundation) in which case the donations above €40 are tax deductible.
