After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, minefields were widely laid by the occupiers and booby traps were left in urban areas by Russian troops as they withdrew.
In addition, scattered across the country are thousands of unexploded munitions and fragments of captured missiles and grenades.
1750,000km2 is currently considered unsafe, which is x times the total area of Belgium.
At the current rate of demining, it is estimated that 452 years are needed to make the entire country mine-free again.
Both agriculture (uncultivable land) and habitation are severely hampered by the mine risk.
We are therefore working in an international framework with Ukrainian Rotarians on various projects, including the development of awareness-raising tools for children so that they do not become victims of landmines.
